Early Life and Becoming a Pirate
Whitebeard’s real name was Edward Newgate. He was an orphan from an island called Sphinx. Sphinx was a poor island and wasn’t part of the World Government. Because of that, there was always fighting. Edward started fighting from childhood in order to survive. Afterward, he became a pirate.
Joining the Rocks Pirates
After some time, he joined the Rocks Pirates. After joining the Rocks Pirates, he recruited young Kaido to join the crew. In the Rocks Pirates, there were other strong foes as his crewmates, like Charlotte Linlin, also known as Big Mom, and Shiki. After the God Valley incident around 38 years ago from the current One Piece timeline, the Rocks Pirates disbanded. Whitebeard formed his own pirate crew, started his new journey, and became known as Whitebeard.
Meeting Kozuki Oden
One day, sailing through the New World, Whitebeard’s ship got broken and stuck. Then he met Kozuki Oden, who was the next Shogun of Wano. Oden immediately attacked Whitebeard and asked him to recruit Oden to his crew, but Whitebeard declined. However, Oden still tried to convince Whitebeard in many ways and helped Whitebeard fix his ship. Before leaving Wano, Whitebeard stated that he saw Oden as his brother. When Whitebeard was leaving, Oden did something crazy again, and Whitebeard took him as his crew. After some years, Whitebeard divided his crew and named Oden the second division commander. After some time passed, he met Marshall D. Teach, also known as Blackbeard.
Encounter with Gol D. Roger
After two years, he went to an island and fought with Gol D. Roger. After two days of fighting, they got together and drank, and Roger talked about Laugh Tale. After conquering the sea, Roger came to see Whitebeard and say goodbye. After a while, he heard that Gol D. Roger was dead. After Roger’s death, Whitebeard took Squard into his crew. Squard’s crew was destroyed by Roger. In the meantime, Whitebeard’s territory started growing bigger, and his name spread throughout the whole world.
Becoming One of the Four Emperors
The World Government also named him one of the Four Emperors. After starting the Great Pirate Era, Whitebeard went to Fish-Man Island with his crew and made Fish-Man Island his territory to protect it. After some time passed, he learned about Portgas D. Ace, who was the captain of the Spade Pirates and also rejected the title of Warlord. He ate the Mera Mera no Mi and had the power to transform into and manipulate flames. Ace was looking for Whitebeard so that he could kill him. After knowing this, Whitebeard met with Ace and fought with him. Ace lost to Whitebeard, and Whitebeard asked Ace to join his pirate crew. Ace agreed to join the Whitebeard Pirates. He became the 2nd division commander and told Whitebeard that Roger was his father. After hearing this, Whitebeard said that the past didn’t matter.
Betrayal by Blackbeard
After a few days, Marshall D. Teach killed Whitebeard’s 4th division commander and got the power of the Yami Yami no Mi, and disappeared. After knowing this, Ace got angry and headed out to kill Blackbeard. On Banaro Island, Ace found Blackbeard and learned that Blackbeard’s next target was Luffy. After hearing this, Ace had no choice but to fight Blackbeard. Ace lost the fight to Blackbeard, and Blackbeard traded Ace for the position of Warlord title with the World Government. The World Government declared that they would execute Portgas D. Ace. On the execution day, Whitebeard arrived at Marineford with his whole fleet to save Ace. The whole Whitebeard crew started fighting against the World Government. While everyone was fighting, suddenly Squard stabbed Whitebeard through his chest. But Whitebeard didn’t do anything to Squard. Despite his condition, he still fought until the very end to protect his crew.
The Death of a Legend
In the end, he was killed by Blackbeard, the one who was once a family to Whitebeard. And the journey of the legend came to an end. It was such a hard moment for every crew member and the One Piece fans that it brought tears.
Legacy of Whitebeard
Whitebeard was a man who never wanted fame or treasure. He always just wanted a family from his childhood. Though he may seem to have an overgrown ego, Whitebeard knew deep down that he was nothing but a single man and was fully aware of his mortality. He knew that the youth were the keys to the future and that their lives were far more important than his own. Because of this, he was not afraid of sacrificing himself for the safety of those he considered his children.
Whitebeard’s legacy lives on through the lives he touched and the family he built, leaving an indelible mark on the world of One Piece and in the hearts of fans everywhere.
